Move-able Joint Bucky

Hello!

Welcome to the first post by the Bucky Group.  Our group is tasked with designing and manufacturing a Bucky figurine with move-able joints.  The goal is to optimize design and tolerances to produce multiple types of fully functioning joints.

Project Purpose

  • Determine appropriate joint designs for each “link” of Bucky’s body
  • Optimize tolerances for varying joint size and joint type
  • Maximize the number of functioning joints at a reasonable build scale
  • Investigate different support and build materials and their impact on printed joints

Project Goals

  • At least three move-able joints:  head, left arm, right arm
  • Utilize at least two different joint types
  • Minimize build time
  • Minimize material used

The next blog post will talk about our current work designing CAD models of the different joints and challenges we predict manufacturing them with 3D printing.

Stay tuned and go Bucky!
