Collapsible Bottle Opener – Ideas and Requirements

Problem Statement

Design a collapsible bottle opener in such a way that it cannot be made with traditional manufacturing methods. It is desired that the bottle opener be collapsible to better fit inside a pocket or on a keychain. To keep the opener closed, it also desired that it has a latch mechanism. Above all, the opening mechanism and hinge must be able to withstand repetitive force exertion from opening bottles.

Project Ideas 

Combine the 3d models of a regular bottle opener (left image) and a bag clip (right image).  The bottle opener will provide the profile for cap removing mechanism while the bag clip will provide the blueprint for the hinge and latch mechanism so the opener can collapse.

Additionally the innfill percentage could potentially be changed to account for areas of high stress which will help avoid deformation and breaking.

Requirements

-Have a hinge to keep the bottle opener small (1″ x 1″ X 1/4″)

-Uniform material composition (keep bottle opener made entirely plastic including opener lip)

-Thick and hefty hinge so opening torque can be transferred from one end of the opener to the other

-Design opener lip in such way that it is strong enough to withstand the opening force of removing a bottle cap
